English translation of several Hebrew and Greek terms indicating holes in a house. Such holes served several purposes: as a chimney for smoke to escape (Hosea 13:3 ); holes in places were doves live (Isaiah 60:8 ); holes in heaven through which rain falls (Genesis 7:11; Genesis 8:2; Malachi 3:10; compare 2 Kings 7:2 ). The Hebrew term indicates holes in the wall for air and light (Genesis 8:6; Joshua 2:15; Judges 5:28 among others). Recessed widows with lattice work marked elaborate public buildings such as the Temple ( 1 Kings 6:4 ) and the royal palace (2 Kings 9:30 ). A third Hebrew term related to enabling something to be seen (1 Kings 7:4 ). See Architecture; House .
