A small, slender, softbodied animal without a backbone, legs, or eyes. They often improve the soil by working decaying matter into the soil while aerating it by their movements. There are many examples in the Bible where insect larvae are called worms. The earthworm is the most representative of the worms of Palestine. It is also used in the Bible as a figure of lowliness or weakness (Psalm 22:6; Job 17:14; Isaiah 41:14 ). Both the Old Testament and the New Testament speak of the place of the ungodly and unbeliever as being that where the worm is always alive and working (Isaiah 66:24 : Mark 9:44 ,Mark 9:44,9:48 ). See Animals .
