1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

(from O. Fr. aparail, aparailler, mod. appareil, from Low Lat. adpariculare, to make fit or equal), equipment, outfit, things furnished for the proper performance of anything, now chiefly used of dress. The word is also applied to the "orphreys," i.e. embroidered strips or borders, on ecclesiastical vestments.
