1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

(through O. Fr. pleit, from Lat. plicitum, folded, plicare, to fold), properly a fold, especially a fold of cloth, now usually in the collateral form "pleat." "Plait" is now principally applied to entwined strands of ribbon, hair, straw or fibre.
