Caracciolo (Or Caraccioli), Giovanni Battista

(called Battistello), a Neapolitan painter, was born about 1580, and studied under F. Imperato, and afterwards under Caravaggio. He also studied the works of Annibale Caracci at Rome. On returning to Naples he painted several pictures for the churches and public edifices of that city. He died in 1641. The best of his works are, St. Cecilia, in the church of Santa Maria; St. Antonio, in San Niccolo; St. Carlo, in Santa Agnello; The Death of the Virgin and The Assumption, in Santa Anna di Lombardi.
