(called da Modena), an Italian painter, designer, and architect, was born at Modena in 1544, and visited Rome at the age of eighteen, where he rose to considerable eminence. He executed a number of works for the chapels and churches during the pontificate of Sixtus V, and also made a great number of designs of subjects from the Old and New Test. As an architect, he designed the Scala Santa at Rome, and the Church of Santa Maria di Paradiso, and La Madonna delle Asse, at Modena. He died at Rome in 1618. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog.
