Huldrich, Jean Jacques
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a Swiss theologian, born at Zurich in 1683, belonged to a family of which several members have distinguished themselves as theologians and philologists. (See HULDERICUS).
He devoted much of his time to the acquisition of Hebrew, and went to the universities of Holland to pursue a course of study in the Oriental languages. On his return to his native place in 1706 he was made pastor of the House of Orphans. In 1710 he was appointed professor of moral science at the Gymnasium of Zurich. His scholarship was of a superior order, and he was frequently solicited to accept a professorship at the universities of Heidelberg and Groningen. He died at Zurich May 25, 1731. He published Historia Jeschua Nazareni, a Judeis blaspheme corrupta, ex manunscripto hactenus inedito Heb. et Lat., cum tiotis (Leyd. 1705, 8vo) — Gentilis Obtrectator, sive de calumniis gentilium in Judaeos Commentarius (Zurich, 1744,4to), a collection of sermons, etc. — Hoefer.
