Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(סָחָר, sachar', Isaiah 23:3; also spoken of what is gained from traffic, profit, wealth, "merchandise," Proverbs 3:14; Isaiah 45:14), a trading-place or emporium. The root signifies to travel about as traders, buying and selling; thus pointing out at once the general character of the commerce of the East from the earliest age to the present.
