Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

an Irish bishop, was born in 1755, in the north of Ireland. He was intended for the Roman Catholic Church, sent to study in one of the institutions on the Continent endowed for the education of Romish priests, but was thrown by accident into the society of the earl of Moira, who induced him to become a Protestant. He was, after taking orders, appointed chaplain to a regiment in America. Not long afterwards he changed his name from Mongan to Warburton, became dean of Ardagh, then bishop of Limerick in 1806, and of Cloyne in 1820. He died at Cloyne palace, August 9, 1826. See (Lond.) Annual Register, 1826, page 270.
