Russian painter; born at Shklov Dec. 10, 1862. He studied at the Odessa School of Design, and entered (1878) the St. Petersburg Art Academy, where he won (1881-83) two silver medals, and (1885) a gold medal for his painting "St. Irene Cures St. Sebastian." In 1887 Geller won the title of "artist of the first degree" for his painting "Ivan the Terrible Taking Orders Before His Death from the Metropolitan." On his graduation in 1887 Geller enlisted as a volunteer, and served in the army for several months. In 1889 he exhibited at the St. Petersburg Academy his painting "The Jewish Conscripts Taking Their Oath," which was purchased by the academy.
