Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

an eminent Roman Catholic prelate, was born April 27, 1803, at Prospect, in Ireland. He studied at the college in Carlow; went in 1820 to Rome,. where he completed his education. In 1828 he received the degree of doctor of theology; was rector of the Irish college at Rome, and in 1849 was appointed archbishop of Armagh. In 1851 he was transferred to Dublin, where he opened, in 1854, the Catholic high-school, whose first rector was John Newman. In 1869 he was made cardinal. He died October 24, 1878.
