Löwengard, Max

German rabbi; born in Württemberg; died at Basel May 25, 1876. He was a friend of Berthold Auerbach and a diligent student of Schelling's philosophy. Though a fervent advocate of Reform in his youth, he became a zealous supporter of Orthodoxy in the latter part of his life, after having occupied rabbinates in Gebenhausen and other communities of Württemberg. He was the author of "Beiträge zur Kritik der Reformbestrebungen in der Synagoge" (Stuttgart, 1841); "Auch Einige Worte Ueber das Neue Gebetbuch im Hamburger Tempel" (Tübingen, 1842); and "Jehova, Nicht Moloch, War der Gott der Hebräer," a refutation of Ghillany's "Die Menschenopfer der Alten Hebräer" (Berlin, 1843). The first work appeared under the pseudonym "Juda Leon."
