πειθός (WH πίθος; see Iota), πειθη, πειθον, (from πείθω, like φειδος from φείδομαι (cf. Winers Grammar, 96 (91))), persuasive: ἐν πειθοῖς λόγοις, 1 Corinthians 2:4 (cf. Buttmann, 73). Not found elsewhere (Winer's Grammar, 24). The Greeks say πιθανός; as πιθανοι λόγοι, Josephus, Antiquities 8, 9, and often in Greek authors See Passow, under the word, πιθανός, 1 e.; (Liddell and Scott, ibid. I. 2; WH's Appendix, p. 153).

(= I. p. 112) λαβὼν πηλὸν ἀπὸ τρόχου [κε ]ραμικοῦ μῖξον μίγηατος τοῦ θεοῦ. . From the inscrr. see the law of astynomy carved at Pergamum in the time of Trajan, OGIS 483.61 ἐάν τινες ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς χοῦν ὀρύσσωιν ἢ λίθους ἢ πηλὸν ποιῶσιν, also Kaibel 646.11 f. (iii/iv A.D.), a sepulchral inscr. deprecating the giving of honours after death—
ζῶντί μοι, εἴ τι ἔχεις, μεταδός, τέφραν δὲ μεθύσκων
πηλὸν ποιήσεις καὶ οὐκ ὁ θανὼν πίεται,
and cf. Herodas II. 28 ff.—
ὃ χρῆν ἑαυτὸν ὅστις ἐστὶ κἀκ ποίου
πηλοῦ πεφύρητ᾽ εἰδότ᾽ ὡς ἐγὼ ζώειν
τῶν δημοτέων φρίσσοντα καὶ τὸν ἥκιστον,
";who ought to know who he is, and of what clay he is mixed, and to live as I do, in awe of even the least of the burghers"; (Knox).
A subst. πηλοποιία is found in P Petr II. 12 (4) (B.C. 241), and an adj. πήλινος in ib. III. 48.9 (iii/B.C.) τῶ ]ν πηλίνων ργων καὶ τῶν πλινθίνων : cf. Luckhard Privathatus p. 26 ff. See also CR xxxiii. p. 2, where W. M. Ramsay publishes a iv/A.D. inscr., in which the head of a noble Anatolian family is described as τὸν [π ̣ήλ ̣]ιν ̣ο [ν χ ̣]ιτῶνα ἐνταυθοῖ περιδυσάμενον, ";putting off the mantle of clay (to consign it) to this place.";
