Thayer's Expanded Definition
ὀρχέομαι, ὀρχοῦμαι: 1aorist ὠρχησαμην; (from χορός, by transposition ὄρχος; cf. ά῾ρπω, ἁρπάζω, and Latin rapio, μορφή and Latin forma; (but these supposed transpositions are extremely doubtful, cf. Curtius, § 189; Fick 4:207,167. Some connect ὀρχέομαι with the root, argh, 'to put in rapid motion'; cf. Vanicek, p. 59)); to dance: Matthew 11:17; Matthew 14:6; Mark 6:22; Luke 7:32. (From Homer down; the Sept. for רָקַד, 1 Chronicles 15:29; Sirach 3:4; 2 Samuel 6:21.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The NT has this word only in the phrase εἰς τὸ παντελές, Luke 13:11, Hebrews 7:25 : so in P Lond 1164 (f).11 (A.D. 212) (= III. p. 161) a man sells some property ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν εἰς τὸ παντελές. This would support a temporal meaning in Heb l.c. ";to save finally,"; which suits well the πάντοτε that follows : so long as our Intercessor lives our σωτηρία is assured. Cf. Syll.3 489.11 (c. B.C. 234) τ ̣ο ̣, ν ̣ ἀγῶνα π ̣α ̣ντελῆ, where the reference is to an interrupted contest, which had been brought to an end, and OGIS 642.4 (end of ii/A.D.) τὸ μνημ (ε)ῖον. . . ἔκτισεν. . αὑτῷ τε καὶ υἱοῖς αὑτοῦ καὶ υἱωνοῖς εἰς τὸ παντελὲς αἰώνιον τειμήν. See also Preisigke 5357.7 ὅσα πρὸς ἀνατροπὴν παντελῆ ἄγει τὸν συνηγορούμενον. In Lk l.c. the meaning is like that of παντελῶς in P Lille I. 26.2 (iii/ B.C.) (= Witkowski.2, p. 49) αὐτὴ (sc. γῆ) μὲν οὖν ἐστιν παντελῶς ἀπηρ [γ ]μένη (";bare,"; ";uncultivated";), P Lond 42.27 (B.C. 168) (= I. p. 31, Selections, p. II) παντελῶς ἀηδίζομαι, ";I am utterly distressed,"; and P Oxy II. 281.11 (A.D. 20–50) παντελῶς ὄντα ἀνέγκλητον, ";being blameless in all respects"; : cf. ib. XII. 1469.4 (A.D. 298) παντελῶς διανύειν τὰ προσήκοντα, ";to accomplish in full our duties,"; and ib. IX. 1186.6 (iv/A.D.) οὐ μὴν κατὰ τὸ παντελὲς ἀπηγορευμένον, ";not entirely forbidden"; (Ed.).
