 προγινώσκω; 2aorist 3person singular προέγνω; perfect passive participle προεγνωσμενος; to have knowledge of beforehand; to foreknow: namely, ταῦτα, 2 Peter 3:17, cf. 2 Peter 3:14,16; τινα, Acts 26:5; οὕς προέγνω, whom he (God) foreknew, namely, that they would love him, or (with reference to what follows) whom he foreknew to be fit to be conformed to the likeness of his Song of Solomon , Romans 8:29 (τῶν εἰς αὐτόν (Χριστόν) πιστεύειν προεγνωσμενων, Justin Martyr, dialog contr Trypho,

c. 42; προγινώσκει ( Θεός) τινας ἐκ μετανοίας σωθήσεσθαι μέλλοντας, id. Apology 1:28); ὅν προέγνω, whose character he clearly saw beforehand, Romans 11:(Romans 11:1> Lachmann in brackets), Romans 11:2> (against those who in the preceding passages from Rom. explain προγινώσκειν as meaning to predestinate, cf. Meyer, Philippi, Van Hengel); προεγνωσμένου, namely, ὑπό τοῦ Θεοῦ (foreknown by God, although not yet 'made manifest' to men), 1 Peter 1:20. ( Wisdom of Solomon 6:14 Wisdom of Solomon 8:8 Wisdom of Solomon 18:6; Euripides, Xenophon, Plato, Herodian, Philostr., others.)

";appoint,"; is read in tbe critical text of Acts 17:26 : cf. P Amh II. 2920 (c. B.C. 250) βασιλέως προστάξαντος. . ., and P Tebt I. 71 (B.C. 114) βασιλέων προσταξάν [τ ]ων μηθένα τῶν ἐπὶ τῶν κριτηρίων καὶ τῶν ἄλ [λ ]ων τῶν πρὸς χρείαις δέχεσθαι ἐγκλήματα. . ., ";the sovereigns decree that neither anyone who exercises judicial functions nor any of the other officials shall receive complaints . . .,"; where the editors note that the formula βασιλέων προσταξάντων ";appears to be used in cases where the following decree is not quoted in its exact words, whether because it was extracted from a series or because the construction is altered to oratio obliqua."; See also P Reinach 1821 (B.C. 108) παρὰ τὰ. . . προστεταγμένα. The verb is common in the inscrr., e.g. Syll 365 (= .3 798)16 (A.D. 37) ὁ δὲ δῆμος. . . προσέταξε τοῖς ἄρχουσι ψήφισμα ὑπαντήσεως εἰσηγήσασθαι αὐτοῖς, and ib. 523 (= 3578)48 (ii/B.C.) μὴ ποιήσας τι τῶν προστεταγμένων ἐν τῶι νόμωι τῶιδε. For the subst. πρόσταγμα cf. P Cairo Zen 5903419 (B.C. 257) καλῶς οὖν ἔχει, Ἀπολλώνιε, ἐπακολουθῆσαί σε τοῖς ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ προστάγμασιν, and for προσταγή cf. Diog. Oenoand. p. 182 (ed. William).
