Vocabulary of the Greek NT

σταυρόω in its literal sense of ";fence with pales"; occurs in P Bilabel 30.12 (A.D. 577 ?) μετὰ τοῦ σταυρωμ [ένου. . . . . . . , where the reference appears to be to a room shut off with pales or laths : see the editor’s note. The late use = ";crucify,"; as in the NT, is seen in Polyb. i. 86, 4; and for the new verb σταυρίσκω cf. Ev. Petr. 2.
