kindly. Hebrew on her heart (as though making an impression on it).

Israel. The first Occurance in a collective sense.

Verse 8

soul. Hebrew. nephesh . App-13 . Figure of speech. Synecdoche (of Part) and Pleonasm, ( App-6 ), to emphasise the intensity of the longing.

Verse 12

gift. The noun put by Metonymy for the verb = ask me to give, &c.

Verse 13

deceitfully. Jacob ' s character his own scourge. The first and only occurance in Genesis.

behold. Figure of speech. Asterismos . App-6 .

Verse 23

Shall not, &c. Figure of speech Erotesis. App-6 .

Verse 25

man. Heb. 'ish . See App-14 .

Verse 26

edge. Hebrew mouth. Figure of speech Pleonasm . The acts of Jacob and his sons at Shechem may be contrasted with those of Abraham (Genesis 12:6 ), and of Joshua (Joshua 24:1-27 ), and of Christ (John 4:5 ).

Verse 28

and. Note the Figure of speech. Polysyndeton , App-6 . to emphasise each item, in Genesis 34:28-29 .

Verse 29

wealth. Hebrew strength. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct). Strength put for the wealth which it acquires.

Verse 30

Canaanites. Descendants of the Nephilim. See Genesis 12:6 and App-23 and App-25 .
