2 Chronicles 34

Peake's Commentary on the BiblePeake's Commentary

Verses 1-33

2 Chronicles 34:1 to 2 Chronicles 35:27 . The Reign of Josiah.— See notes on 2 Kings 22, 2 Kings 23:1-30, which form the basis of the Chronicler’ s account; but he has made many alterations in accordance with his general tendencies. One important difference between the two accounts is that, according to the Chronicler, Josiah’ s Reformation takes place before the finding of the book of the Law, an obviously illogical sequence; but the Chronicler desires to emphasize Josiah’ s piety even in his tender years. The description of the celebration of the Passover ( 2 Chronicles 35:1-19) is far fuller than that given in 2 Kings 23:21-23.

2 Chronicles 36:1-4 . The Reign of Jehoahaz (see notes on 2 Kings 23:30-34).

2 Chronicles 36:5-8 . The Reign of Jehoiakim (see notes on 2 Kings 23:36 f.).

2 Chronicles 36:9 f. The Reign of Jehoiachin (see notes on 2 Kings 24:8-17).

2 Chronicles 36:11-21 . The Reign of Zedekiah; the Destruction of Jerusalem (see notes on 2 Kings 24:18-20; 2 Kings 25:1-7; 2 Kings 25:13-15).

2 Chronicles 36:22 f. The Decree of Cyrus (see Ezra 1:1-3).
