The Gentile nations are permitted to afflict Israel in chastisement for her national sins, but invariably and inevitably retribution falls upon them. "That day": often the equivalent of "the day of the Lord" Isaiah 2:10-22; Revelation 19:11-21. The prophecy here passes from the general to the particular, from historic and fulfilled judgments upon Assyria to the final destruction of all Gentile world-power at the return of the Lord in glory.
