Psalms 112:1-10

This psalm is connected with the previous one, as can be seen from the same alphabetic layout of the verses (see note: JND trans.). In Psalm in the righteousness of the LORD lasts forever (v. 3). In Psalms 112:1-10 it is the righteousness of the one who fears the LORD which lasts forever (vv. 3, 9). Our v. 1 continues on from v. 10 of Psalms 111:1-10 and takes it a bit further. Fearing God, which is the way to gain wisdom, is also the way of blessing. It is not a matter of merely carrying out the LORD’s commandments but of actually enjoying doing them. The Lord Jesus knew this and could say: "I delight to do thy will, O my God" (Psalms 40:8; see also John 4:34).

Some people are always afraid of hearing bad news. However, the fear of God takes away this fear of men (v. 8) or of evil tidings (v. 7). The heart of the one who trusts in God is not troubled by what happens (Proverbs 1:33); he is steadfast, because the Lord sustains him (v. 8; cf. John 14:1; John 14:27). Nevertheless, a steadfast heart can at the same time be sensitive and full of compassion. A good man is generous (v. 5), distributes and gives to the poor (v. 9). "He is gracious, and full of compassion" just like God Himself (v. 4; cf. Psalms 111:4; James 5:11).
