Candlemas
The American Church Dictionary and Cyclopedia
A popular name for the Feast of the Purification, observed on February 2d, from the custom of lighting up churches with tapers and lamps in remembrance of our Lord having been declared on this day by Simeon to be "a light to lighten the Gentiles." (St. Luke 2:25-32.)
