Ahiah

Holman Bible Dictionary

(uh hi' uh) Personal name meaning, “Yahweh is my brother.” Variant spelling of Ahijah but not used consistently by English translations to reflect Hebrew spellings: 1. achiyah —1Samuel 14:3,1 Samuel 14:18; 2 Samuel 23:34; 1 Kings 4:3; 1 Kings 11:29-30; 1 Kings 12:15; 1Kings 14:2,1 Kings 14:4; 1 Kings 15:27-33; 1 Chronicles 2:25; 1 Chronicles 8:7; 1 Chronicles 11:36; 1 Chronicles 26:20; 2 Chronicles 9:29; Nehemiah 10:27 . 2 . achiyahu —1Kings 14:4-6,1 Kings 14:18; 2 Chronicles 10:15 . 3 . achyo2 Samuel 6:3-4; 1 Chronicles 8:14 , 1 Chronicles 8:31; 1 Chronicles 9:37; 1 Chronicles 13:7 . The variation occurs because the Hebrew divine name Yahweh can be abbreviated several ways when joined with another word to form a proper name. Three of the possible forms are illustrated here: yah, yahu, yo. Still more complicating is the English system of transliterating the Hebrew letter yodh sometimes with y, sometimes with j, and sometimes with i. See Ahijah .
