Ahitub

Holman Bible Dictionary

(uh hi' tuhb) Personal name meaning, “my brother is good.” 1. Priest, son of Phinehas and grandson of Eli ministering in Shiloh (1 Samuel 14:3 ). He was Ahimelech's father (1 Samuel 22:9 ). 2 . Father of Zadok, the high priest under David and Solomon (2 Samuel 8:17 ). The name occurs twice in the Chronicler's list of priests (1 Chronicles 6:7-8 , 1 Chronicles 6:11-12 , 1 Chronicles 6:52 ). Compare 1 Chronicles 9:11 . Ezra descended from Ahitub's line (Ezra 7:2 ). Ahitub thus illustrates the many people who exercised great influence in Israel's history and religion but who play a small role in the Bible.
