Holman Bible Dictionary

(ay' ihn) Place meaning, “eye” or “water spring.” Often used as first part of a place name indicating the presence of a water source. English often used “En” as first part of such names. See Numbers 34:11 ). Location is uncertain. 2. City of southern Judah (Joshua 15:32 ) belonging to Simeon (Joshua 19:7 ) but assigned as homestead for the Levites, who had no land allotted (Joshua 21:16 ), if this is not read Ashan as in some manuscripts of Joshua and in 1 Chronicles 6:59 .
