Holman Bible Dictionary

(ak' kuhb) Personal name possibly meaning, “protector,” or “protected one.” 1. Descendant of Solomon in post-exilic Judah about 420 B.C. (1 Chronicles 3:24 ). 2 . Gatekeeper of the Temple after the return from Exile (1 Chronicles 9:17; Ezra 2:42; Nehemiah 7:45; Nehemiah 11:19 ). They were Levites (Nehemiah 12:25 ). Since “the children of Akkub” are mentioned (Nehemiah 7:45 ), the family apparently served for several generations, with more than one person in the family line named Akkub. 3. A Levite who helped Ezra teach the Law to God's returned people (Nehemiah 8:7 ). He may have been related to 2. 4. The head of another family of Temple staff personnel (Ezra 2:45 ).
