Holman Bible Dictionary

(am' ram) Personal name meaning “exalted people.” 1. Father of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam and grandson of Levi (Exodus 6:18-20 ). Moses' father, Amram, was the father of the Levitical family, the Amramites (Numbers 3:27; 1 Chronicles 26:23 ), who served in the wilderness sanctuary and may have served in the Temple treasuries in later years. 2. One of the twelve sons of Bani who was guilty of marrying foreign women (Ezra 10:34 ). 3 . One of four sons of Dishon in 1 Chronicles 1:41 . In Genesis 36:26 , the four sons of Dishon are also listed, however Amram is listed as Hemdan. Translations other than the KJV list this son of Dishon as Hemdan in Chronicles as well as Genesis.
