Anchor

Holman Bible Dictionary

A weight held on the end of a cable that when submerged in water holds a ship in place. Anchors were made of stone, iron, and lead during biblical times. The ship on which Paul sailed to Rome let down four anchors as it approached Malta (Acts 27:29-30 ,Acts 27:29-30,27:40 ). “Anchor” is used in a figurative sense in Hebrews 6:19 where the hope of the gospel is compared to “an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast”—that is, a spiritual support in times of trial.
