Chambers of the South

Holman Bible Dictionary

Reference to some unknown phenomenon in the skies. Since “chambers of the south” is mentioned along with other stellar constellations (Job 9:9 ), the phenomenon is usually taken to mean some sort of constellation or group of constellations. Some have taken “chambers of the south” to be a reference to the bright portion of the sky from Argus to Centauri. Others have taken the term as a reference to the zodiac or perhaps to the southern portion of the zodiac. Compare Job 37:9; Job 38:22 . See Astrology; Astronomy; Heavens.
