Holman Bible Dictionary

A circular route that a person, a geographical feature, or a natural object follows. Underlying the English word are at least four Hebrew words indicating round, surround, around, or turning. Samuel went around a circuit of cities to judge Israel (1 Samuel 7:16 ). The human eye views heaven as a circular vault or dome, where God takes His daily walk (Job 22:14 ). Similarly, the sun passes along the circuit of the heavens (Psalm 19:6 ). The wind appears to run a meaningless circular course going nowhere (Ecclesiastes 1:6 ). Jerusalem within its walls represented a circle or circuit, which David repaired (1 Chronicles 11:8 NRSV). The villages around Jerusalem formed a circuit ( Nehemiah 12:28 NRSV).
