Calcareous or horny skeletal deposit produced by anthozoan polyps. The red or precious coral found exclusively in the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas (Corallium rubrum ) is the type known to the biblical writers. The value of wisdom surpasses the value of gold, silver, a variety of precious stones, crystal, or coral (Job 28:12-18 ). Coral was among the goods of trade between Israel and Edom (Ezekiel 27:16 ).
