Holman Bible Dictionary

(dawr' cuhss) Personal name meaning, “gazelle.” A Christian woman of Joppa who was known for her charitable works (Acts 9:36 ). She was also called Tabitha, an Aramaic name. When she became sick and died, friends sent for the apostle Peter. He came to Joppa. Through him Dorcas was restored to life. This was the first such miracle performed through any of the apostles, and it resulted in many new believers.
