Eglath-Shelishiyah

Holman Bible Dictionary

(ehg' luhth-ssheh lihssh' ih ihah) Place name meaning, “the third heifer.” Place apparently in Moab where Moab fugitives fled in Isaiah's description of disaster (Isaiah 15:5 ). The name has given translators and interpreters many problems. The location is not known. The words do not apparently fit the poetic structure and are unexpected in the syntax and context, there being no adverb or preposition between Zoar and Eglath-Shelishiyah in the Hebrew. King James makes the phrase an identifying statement with Zoar—”an heifer of three years old.” The same problems arise in the closely related Jeremiah 48:34 .
