Holman Bible Dictionary
(ehl ay' ssah) Personal name meaning, “God has made.” 1. Son of Shaphan, the royal scribe. He took Jeremiah's message to the exiled community in Babylon while on a mission for King Zedekiah (Jeremiah 29:3 ). 2 . Descendant of Jerahmeel in tribe of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:39-40 ); spelled Eleasah in English translations. 3. Descendant of Saul and Jonathan in tribe of Benjamin (1 Chronicles 8:37 ); spelled Eleasah in English translations. Compare 1 Chronicles 9:43 . 4 . Priest with a foreign wife who agreed to divorce her to avoid temptation of foreign gods in time of Ezra (Ezra 10:22 ).
