Elisabeth

Holman Bible Dictionary

(e' lihss' eh behth) Personal name meaning, “my God is good fortune” or “my God has sworn an oath.” A woman descended from Aaron who was the wife of Zacharias the priest (Luke 1:5 ). Both she and her husband are described in Luke 1:6 as being noteworthy examples of piety and devotion to the Lord. However, she was barren in her old age. God removed from her the stigma of childlessness, and she became the mother of John the Baptist, forerunner of Christ. She also was kin to Mary the mother of Jesus; but the Bible does not indicate the exact degree of relationship between the two women. See John the Baptist; Annunciation .
