Holman Bible Dictionary
(ehl' ee mass) Personal name possibly meaning, “wise.” A magician and false prophet also known as Bar-jesus (Acts 13:6-11 ). At Paphos on the island of Cyprus, Elymas tried to dissuade the deputy Sergius Paulus from listening to the words of Barnabas and Paul. He was denounced by Paul and stricken temporarily blind.
