Eshcol

Holman Bible Dictionary

(ehssh' cahl) Place name meaning, “valley of grapes,” or “cluster.” 1. A valley in Canaan that was explored by the twelve Israelites sent to spy out the land (Numbers 13:23 ). From the valley of Eshcol they brought back an exceptionally large cluster of grapes. Apparently the valley was given the name on account of grape clusters such as the one found by the Israelite spies. 2. Brother of Mamre and Aner (Genesis 14:13 ). He and his brothers were Amorites who were allies of Abram in the defeat of Chedorlaomer.
