Holman Bible Dictionary
The Greek gangraina ( 2 Timothy 2:17 ) can refer either to gangrene, a death of soft tissue resulting from problems with blood flow (NAS, NRSV, REB) or to an ulcer (canker, KJV; open sore, TEV). In 2Timothy gangraina is used figuratively for false teachings which destroy people who accept them.
