Holman Bible Dictionary
One invited to a feast (1 Samuel 9:24; 2 Samuel 15:11 ). Jesus outraged those in Jericho by being a guest at the home of Zachaeus, a well-known sinner (Luke 19:7 ). Peter crossed racial barriers by welcoming the Gentile messengers sent by Cornelius as guests in his home (Acts 10:23 ). Figurative uses of guest include Zephaniah 1:7 where consecrated guests are an image of invading armies the Lord invited to punish Judah. Jesus described His disciples as guests at a wedding feast who cannot mourn as long as He, the bridegroom, is with them ( Matthew 9:15 ). God's salvation is pictured as a wedding hall full of guests who must have proper attire (Matthew 22:10-13 ).
