Help, Helps

Holman Bible Dictionary

In addition to the usual sense of assistance, the KJV used helps in two technical senses: for equipment used to secure a ship in storm (Acts 27:17 ) and for a gift of ministry (1 Corinthians 12:28 ). Modern translations understand the “helps” of Acts 27:1 in various senses: ropes (NIV, TEV); supporting cables (NAS); tackle (REB); or generally as measures to undergird the ship (NRSV). The helps of 1Corinthians refers to the ability to offer help or assistance. In the Septuagint, God is known as the help of those who lack strength and live in poverty ( Sirach 11:12 ). It has been suggested that Paul refers to the ministry of the deacons who care for the poor and the sick. A general reference to all those who demonstrate love in their dealings with others is possible.
