Heres

Holman Bible Dictionary

(hee' rehss) Place name meaning “sun.” A mountain pass over which Gideon traveled in returning from his battle with the Midianites (Judges 8:13 ). It is distinct from the more western Mount Heres in Judges 1:35 , often identified with Beth-Shemesh (“house of the sun”). KJV translates Judges 8:13 as “before the sun was up” as compared to NAS, “by the ascent of Heres.” Location of Gideon's pass is not known, though some scholars now locate it as the Ascent of Horus which leads to tell Deir Alla east of the Jordan. Strong manuscript evidence reads “city of Heres” or Heliopolis in Isaiah 19:18 (compare REB, TEV, NRSV). See Heliopolis .
