Holman Bible Dictionary

(hee' rehth) Modern translation spelling of Hareth, place name meaning “cut in to.” Forest in which David hid from Saul after settling his parents with the king of Moab (1 Samuel 22:5 ). Some identify it with Horesh (1 Samuel 23:15 ) located at khirbet Khoreisa two miles south of Ziph. Others place it at the village of Kharas near Keilah. From Hereth, David attacked the Philistines at Keilah (1 Samuel 23:1-5 ).
