Holman Bible Dictionary

Legacy, inheritance, birthright. The Old Testament frequently refers to the promised land as Israel's heritage from God (Exodus 6:8; Psalm 16:6; Psalm 135:12 ). Children are regarded as a heritage from God (Psalm 127:3 ). The law and God's protective care are likewise called a heritage (Psalm 119:111; Isaiah 54:17 ). Israel is called God's heritage (Psalm 94:5; Jeremiah 12:7; Joel 3:2 ). This image is applied to the church in 1 Peter 5:3 (compare NAS margin, allotment). Revelation 21:7 speaks of the water of life as the heritage of those martyrs who conquered through their faithfulness. See Inheritance .
