Hundreds
Holman Bible Dictionary
A division of 100 persons. Moses appointed leaders of hundreds to assist him in rendering legal decisions (Exodus 18:21 ,Exodus 18:21,18:25 ). In Numbers 31:14 leaders of hundreds are commanders of forces of 100 men each. The Philistine ( 1 Samuel 29:2 ) and the Romans (see Centurion ) also made use of divisions of 100. The seating of the crowd in groups of hundreds in Mark 6:40 is perhaps meant to recall Israel's wilderness division.
