Iscariot
Holman Bible Dictionary
(ihss cehr' ih uht) Personal name transliterated from Hebrew into Greek and meaning, “man of Kerioth”; or perhaps a name derived from Latin and meaning, “assassin” or “bandit.” Surname of both the disciple Judas who betrayed Jesus (Mark 3:19 ) and of his father Simon (John 6:71 ). If bandit is the meaning of the name, Judas and his father may have been members of a patriotic party, the Zealots. “Man of Kerioth” is probably the meaning of the surname, referring to town of Kerioth. See Judas; Kerioth.
