Izhar
Holman Bible Dictionary
(ihz' hahr) Personal name meaning, “olive oil” or “he sparkles.” 1. Son of Kohath and grandson of Levi, thus original ancestor of a priestly clan (Exodus 6:18 ). He was father of Korah (Numbers 16:1 ). See Korah . Compare 1 Chronicles 23:18 . 2 . The written Hebrew text of 1 Chronicles 4:7 names Izhar as a member of the tribe of Judah but uses a different letter for “h,” sometimes rendered “ch” in English. The resulting name is of uncertain meaning. An early Hebrew scribal note followed by the early Syriac and Latin translations makes the name Jezoar (KJV, REB) or Zohar (NIV).
