Kiriathaim

Holman Bible Dictionary

(kihr' ih ath a ihm) Place name meaning, “double city” or “two cities.” 1. A Levitical city and city of refuge in the tribal territory of Naphtali (1 Chronicles 6:76; KJV has Kirjathaim). In the parallel list in Joshua 21:32 , Kartan stands in the place of Kiriathaim and is probably another name for the same city. See Genesis 14:5 , Shaveh-Kiriathaim means “the plain of Kiriathaim”). Later the Israelites took it from the Amorites and assigned it to the tribe of Reuben (Numbers 32:37 : Joshua 13:19 ). The Moabites controlled the city during the Exile (Jeremiah 48:1 ,Jeremiah 48:1,48:23; Ezekiel 25:9 ). Perhaps to be identified with el-Qereiyat, about five miles northwest of Dibon; however, no remains from before about 100 B.C. have been found on this site.
