Latchet

Holman Bible Dictionary

KJV term for a leather thong or strap used to fasten sandals (Genesis 14:23; Isaiah 5:27; Mark 1:7; Luke 3:16; John 1:27 ). According to the rabbis, untying sandals was a slave's task that could not be required of a disciple. John the Baptist thus claimed for himself a position lower than that of a slave before Jesus.
