Holman Bible Dictionary

(may' uh cuh) A personal name of uncertain meaning (possibly “dull” or “stupid”). 1. son of Nahor, Abraham's brother (Genesis 22:24 ); this Maacah perhaps gave his name to the Aramean kingdom west of Basham and southwest of Mount Hermon; the residents of this kingdom, the Maachathites (ma a thites), were not driven out during the Israelite conquest of Canaan (Joshua 13:13 ). Later, this people sided with the Ammonites against David (2 Samuel 10:6-8 ). This nation is perhaps personified as the wife (ally) of Machir at 1 Chronicles 7:16 . 2 . Concubine of Caleb (1 Chronicles 2:48 ). 3 . Wife of Jeiel of Gibeon (1 Chronicles 8:29; 1 Chronicles 9:35 ). 4 . Wife of David and the mother of Absalom (2 Samuel 3:3; 1 Chronicles 3:2 ). 5 . Father/ancestor of one of David's warriors (1 Chronicles 11:43 ). 6 . Father/ancestor of Shephatiah who led the tribe of Simeon in David's reign (1 Chronicles 27:16 ). 7 . Father/ancestor of Achish, king of Gath (1 Kings 2:39 ). 8 . Mother of King Abijam (1 Kings 15:2 ) and ancestress of King Asa (1Kings 15:10,1 Kings 15:13 ).
