Holman Bible Dictionary
Self-control; calmness; temporhyateness (Philippians 4:5 ). The underlying Greek term is used in parallel with kindness (2 Maccabees 9:27 ). Modern translations read forbearance (RSV), forbearing spirit (NAS), gentleness (NIV, NRSV), and “consideration of others” (REB).
