Night Watch
Holman Bible Dictionary
An ancient division of time (Psalm 90:4; Psalm 119:148; Lamentations 2:19; Matthew 14:25 ). According to the later Jewish system, the night was divided into three watches (evening, midnight, and morning). The Greco-Roman system added a fourth (cockcrowing) between midnight and morning (Mark 13:35 ). The fourth watch (Matthew 14:25; Mark 6:48 ) designates the time just before dawn.
